This project was developed in response to a final-year university brief that asked us to explore the concept of space. I chose to investigate this through my daily commute by bicycle, using the journey as a way to examine the often-overlooked experience of cycling in an urban environment.
My aim was to draw attention to the vulnerabilities cyclists encounter every day. During each journey, I photographed the obstacles, road markings, and infrastructure that affected my route. Although the commute itself was relatively short, the sheer number of hazards were many. These obstacles go unnoticed by non-cyclists, so I chose to document them through a series of three concertina books.
Using the What3Words location system, I precisely recorded where each photograph was taken, adding authenticity to the project while enabling others to locate and experience these sites for themselves.
The books open out displaying the images of obstacles in order of appearance, taking the reader on my journey.
The type is set resembling yellow lines, chevrons and zebra crossings, tying all my themes together.
The box contains three individual concertina books, each book shows a different section of the journey.

I chose to line the inside of the box with 300gsm yellow card, this makes the box feel more rigid and premium.
